waratah and wattle
THE POEM THAT I CHOOSE IS CALLED WARATAH AND WATTLE
though poor and in trouble I wander alone,
with a rebel cockade in my hat;
though friends may desert me, and kindred disown,
my country will never do that!
You may sing of the Shamrock, the Thistle, the Rose,
or the three in a bunch if you will;
but I know of a country that gathered all those,
and I love the great land where the Waratah grows,
and the Wattle-bough blooms on the hill.
Australia! Australia! so fair to behold-
While the blue sky is arching above;
The stranger should never have need to be told,
that the Wattle-bloom means that her heart is of gold,
And the Waratah’s red with her love.
Australia! Australia! Most beautiful name,
Most kindly and bountiful land;
I would die every death that might save her from shame,
If a black cloud should rise on the strand;
But whatever the quarrel, whoever the foes,
Let them come! Let them come when they will!
Though the struggle be grim, ’tis Australia that knows
that her children shall fight while the Waratah grows,
and the Wattle blooms out on the hill.
1.) What changes have you made? The changes that I have mad are, in the normal poem it is saying how Australia is and is saying how hot and dry it is and how poor and untroubled by the drought in Australia. And I have changed it around by saying the opposite, and saying how cold and raining and I have changed it by saying how rich people are now and back in the 1960 they weren’t as rich as us now and it is, and saying how Australia is now, and what It was like back in the 1960s.
2.) Why? What does it tell us about changes in Australia? Well back in the 1960s it was really hot and was dry but now the very opposite has happened and now it is; it is raining and is cold. It is also saying that the people back then were not rich and most couldn’t afford to live in a house, and now people are rich and most people have house to live in. it is also saying how people back in the 1960s will do anything for Australia and its name, but now no one cares about the country, everyone now is tossing all the rubbish and don’t care what happens but in the 1960s everyone cared about Australia.
3.) What techniques have you used to reveal these changes (metaphors, simile, personification, onomatopoeia?) I have used metaphors in my change an example: Australia! Australia! So fair to behold. There is a simile in the
poem an example: While the blue sky is arching above. There is a personification in the poem and an example: That her children shall fight while the Waratah grows, and the Wattle blooms out on the hill. There is no onomatopoeia in the poem.
4.) If you used a technique, why did you choose it? How is it effective in creating meaning? Yes I did use a technique. The technique was at the end of each sentence each word on the last sentence rimed and in most off the sentences I changed most words in to my on words. The reason why I choose this technique was because it was the only way that I could change the poem around. And it saves me from using the thesaurus and makes me use my brain more and makes me use it wisely.
